ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY-ASKED MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONS

What are the benefits of becoming a member of IAAP?

IAAP membership benefits, for both individuals and their employers, are outlined here:  Benefits of IAAP membership.

Testimonials by members on the value of IAAP membership

How much does it cost to join?

For a Professional member, there is a one-time processing fee of $15 (U.S.) and annual dues of $58 (U.S.), for a total of $73 (U.S.). For a Student member, there is no processing fee, only annual dues of $24 (U.S.). If a member wants to join a local IAAP chapter, chapter and division dues are additional and those dues vary depending on which division/chapter you join.  See link below to "Chapter Locator" for chapter listings in your area, including contact information, and annual dues amounts for each chapter. If you reside outside the US, its territories or Canada, contact the membership department staff at Headquarters for answers to your questions about membership and annual dues for international members

Should I join a local chapter?

Chapter membership is highly recommended, but optional. It depends on what benefits you are seeking as a member of IAAP. By attending local chapter meetings and events, you will have many opportunities to network with fellow administrative professionals and participate in local educational programs. Being actively involved in a chapter also helps you gain leadership experience and builds management-level skills -- can be everything from public speaking, to project management, to strategic planning, to event planning -- skills you might not learn on the job or through training provided to admins by employers.

Click here for "Chapter Locator" to find listing of IAAP chapters in your area, including contact information and annual dues amounts for chapter membership.

Do I have to join a local chapter?

No. You can join initially as an Association Member-at-Large and transfer to a chapter at a later date.

What does it mean to be an Association Member-at-Large or a Division-at-Large member?

If you join IAAP and do not opt to join a local chapter or if there is not a chapter nearby, you have the option to be an Association Member-at-Large or Division Member-at-Large. You would receive information and resources from International Headquarters, such as OfficePRO magazine, membership discounts, and access to all areas of the IAAP Web site, but you would not be affiliated with a local chapter. As a Division Member-at-Large member you would also receive regional news and updates from your Division, such as a Division newsletter and other communications, and you would be able to participate at the Division level.

If you join initially as a Member-at-Large, and then choose to join a chapter later, you may transfer your membership anytime by contacting a local chapter or by contacting the membership department at Headquarters and paying the additional dues amounts for chapter membership.

If my company chooses to join, what classification do they fall under?

All IAAP memberships are individual memberships.  Most likely, a company representative who does not qualify as a Professional member or student would join as an Associate member. This classification allows the company to own the membership and specify a contact person for the company. This also allows flexibility to transfer the membership to a different company representative if needed. The cost for this membership includes a one-time processing fee of $15 (U.S.) and annual dues of $155 (U.S.), for a total of $170 (U.S.).  Contact the membership department for more information about Associate membership.

Several people in my company are interested in joining, is there a category for us?

Each person can join as a Professional member by paying the international dues and processing fee of  $73 (U.S.).  If joining a local chapter, additional division and chapter dues apply (see "How much does it cost to join" Q and A above). Or, if your company is interested, they can receive information on how to charter a Corporate Chapter. Any chapter requires a minimum of 15 members to be installed. For more information, contact the Membership Department at IAAP Headquarters, phone 816.891.6600 or e-mail: membership@iaap-hq.org.

Do I have to have the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) or Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) rating to become a member?

No, certification is not a requirement of membership.
