Employers Investing in Training For Administrative Support Staff
Wise employers are investing in the professional development and training of administrative support staff.
As administrative professionals expand their responsibilities, new avenues are opening up for admins to build skills and increase their value to the organization, according to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). Administrative professionals are being called upon to utilize not only computer and technology skills, but also interpersonal communications, project management, negotiation and more.
In a 2005 survey, IAAP members cited the need to keep up with changing technology and an increased workload as the most significant issues facing their profession. Specific subjects in which respondents most often said they needed training included computer software applications, technological applications such as Web conferencing, supervisory and management skills, project management, public speaking/presentation skills, computer network administration, time management, organizational skills, meeting and special event planning, and writing and grammar skills.
Professional development represents a win-win situation for business and the administrative professional. By providing opportunities to enhance individual skills, employers will reap the benefits of increased productivity. Admins gain the reward of greater job satisfaction and more fully realizing their personal potential.
